Sad News

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Oguri Sensei yesterday. While I can’t claim to know him I did attend his training in the Hombu whenever I was in Japan and as well as being a very skillful martial artist he was a very patient teacher and an absolute gentleman. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Care of Wooden Weapons

For those of you who have recently purchased bokken, hanbo or bo some tips on how to take care of them.

Newly purchased weapons should be sanded using coarse grade and then fine grade sandpaper. This removes any varnish or lacquer that was used to protect them in transit. Then you need to oil them with either boiled linseed oil or a mixture of boiled linseed and tung oil. Apply oil to the weapon using a cloth or a brush, leave for about fifteen minutes and wipe off any excess, leave the weapon to dry, apply another coat of oil. Reapply as often as you like.

Weapons should be lightly oiled every month or so and fully sanded and re-oiled once or twice a year.

Remember not all weapons are designed for full-contact training. Check your weapons before use for splinters and for any sign or damage – cracks etc. Small splinters and dents can be sanded out. If a weapon is cracked or showing any other sign of major damage it should be retired.

Beginners’ Course and Upcoming Seminars

The beginners’ course started yesterday but it’s not too late to join if you wish. I’d be delighted if we had more people training so if you’re interested please let me know.

Holger Kunzmann  Shihan is teaching a seminar this weekend in the Bujinkan Meehan dojo. The theme is koppojutsu and biken. It will be excellent so I’d like all my students to make an effort to be there. More info at www.bujinkan.ie

Alan Butler Shihan is teaching a taijutsu seminar in Galway on the 24th July. It’s in Alan’s Dojo in Oranmore. It’s only about an hour an a half from Dublin and it will be a great day’s training.

Alex Meehan Shihan is teaching a one day seminar on the Ten Chi Jin Tyaku no Maki on Saturday the 6th of August and again I’d ask all my students to make a very special effort to attend.

New Dōjō, Kihon Happō Workshop, Budocamp, Beginners’ Course.

The Bujinkan Kiso Dōjō is opening in Trinity College Dublin on Wednesday the 29th June at 8 p.m. The Dōjō is being run by Shidoshi Shane Duggan, a student of  Shihan Alex Meehan. There has always been a strong training relationship between the Meehan Dōjō and the Jishin Dōjō so I would encourage as many of my students as possible to support Shane. Further details of the Dōjō can be found here.

Another of Alex Meehan’s students, Matthew Harvey is teaching a two week intensive Budo Camp this summer. The Camp is aimed at 14-18 year olds and will take in the Harold’s Cross Dōjō. Further details can be found here.

Shihan Alex Meehan is teaching a one day workshop on  Kihon Happō in the Harold’s Cross Dōjō. Alex is just back from Japan so it should be a really great workshop. To book your place go to the event’s Facebook Page.

Finally, one for ourselves, we have a new beginners’ course starting on the 4th of July. The course is intended to serve as an introduction to Bujinkan Dōjō Budo Taijutsu. There is more information about the course here and you can sign up for the course via Facebook.
